About Dr. Sean M. R. Crowell

After being born in Oklahoma, I grew up until my mid-teen years in Pennsylvania, at which point I moved to Chicago for two years and then ended up graduating from high school in Comanche, Oklahoma. I am a proud graduate of Oklahoma’s only public liberal arts college, the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, where I studied mathematics. I continued on to study mathematics at the University of Oklahoma and earned my PhD. Along the way, I discovered a passion for atmospheric science and the interconnected Earth system in which we live. This blog is partially about that.

My upbringing in liberal arts at USAO taught me that the history of our species is complicated, and that our achievements should be celebrated while always keeping the truth of the darker aspects of that history in mind. That awareness as a society starts with self-awareness. We have to identify our own less admirable tendencies to progress forward, and then bring that awareness into our roles in the world. This blog is partially about that.

From the moment that I stepped into a classroom as a new graduate student to teach algebra, I felt the pull of education and sharing knowledge. Over the years, I have taught students in mathematics as well as supervised research projects by undergraduate and graduate students, and the energy they bring to their efforts to learn and grow are one of the best things about my chosen career. The blog is also partially about that.

I love to write, and to read, and to think. From time to time, I may write something of interest to others, and so I will put my ideas here in case anyone finds them useful.
